If you are looking towards Southern Utah for your next family vacation, we have some favorite spots we think you should check out. Most of our staff lives in St George and have become well versed in the many attractions and activities around here. Our top “to-do’s” are listed below, let us know if you have any other favorites that should have made the list.

Lava Tubes at Snow Canyon State Park

The lava tubes in Snow Canyon State Park and the perfect adventure for family fun. There are 3 main tubes that you can explore and a few others that require some tights squeezing to enter. Inside you can find geological wonders and cooler temperatures. Some of the paths require a little bit of climbing so we suggest bringing a headlamp and backpack if you really want to explore. This excursion can take as little as 30 minutes or as long as 2 days if you explore in depth.

Zion National Park

If you are in the area and have the time, we highly recommend spending some time in Zion’s National Park. Zion offers great hiking and camping for all ages and experience levels. For the beginner we suggest the riverside walk, for the adventurer we suggest spending a day hiking the Angel’s landing trail. For a full list of our favorite hikes in Zion click here.

Kanaraville Falls

Kanaraville Falls is a beautiful hike that takes you on an adventure through a slot canyon with extraordinary views and a chance to climb up a waterfall! This hike is growing in popularity, but doesn’t have the same crowds that you will find in some of the larger national parks. This 4.8 mile hike is great for most ages, but keep in mind there are some trickier parts that might not be a great fit for young inexperienced hikers. Bring shoes you can get wet, some sunscreen, a camera, and an adventurous spirit to make this hike a memorable experience.

Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon

Hoodoos rock structures that resemble a totem-pole. These large structures are formed through erosion of land overtime, and range from 5 to 150 feet tall. One of the most common places to find these glorious formations is right next door in Bryce Canyon National Park. The variety in the rocks makes for a fun learning experience for children and geological enthusiasts alike! Traveling with a family that includes children and teenagers can have its challenges. Younger children are typically happy with any family friendly adventure. Traveling with teenagers, whom are often opinionated and feel self-sufficient, can pose an entirely different set of challenges. ATV Adventures are perfect for any ages, even teenagers

It can be very difficult to find activities that will be interesting and fun for younger children, parents, AND teenagers. Outdoor activities are even harder to find for every age group. There are ton’s of activities younger children will love. You can do many different activities such as hiking, swimming, tubing or even horseback riding but finding any of those activities that will work for all age groups together at once can be a daunting challenge.

The solution for this is just may be an ATV tour for the entire family. Typically, you will find tours that offer ATV’s for one person, ATV’s for two persons and UTV’s for 4 persons. No matter what size your family is, this is an activity that can be enjoyed together.

An ATV Tour is pure excitement for all. Younger children love the excitement of riding on an ATV. The teenagers will love the thrill and power of an ATV. Teenagers like the power they feel from these massive machines. They also love having the ability to actually drive an ATV, depending on age. Parents will love the idea that they have found an activity everyone will talk about for years to come.

There are many reasons parents choose an ATV tour for the entire family. Here are just a few of the top reasons to choose an ATV adventure for your next family vacation:ATV Tour Group

  • Forming new and exciting bonds with your children and finding a common interest.

Outdoor Adventure” should be the nick name for Southern Utah.

Utah is one of the top destinations in the country for anyone who likes the outdoors.  There is a vast amount of outdoor activities and always something to fit everyone, especially in Southern Utah. If you like ATV riding, off-roading, hiking, rock climbing, cycling, jet skiing, boating, fishing, golfing or even just taking in the beautiful scenery then Southern Utah is the place for you.

The weather can change drastically from over 100 degrees in the peak summer months to under 30 degrees at night in the winter months. You may not run into any snow in the winter in St. George, UT but just 40 minutes away you can be snow skiing or hiking in the snow. The weather may be semi-warm at Zion National Park in the winter but the water is very cold, be prepared.  If you are planning on a trip to the area, then you need to be prepared for your adventure.

Dress Appropriately100_0843-small

  • Dressing in layers, even in hot weather, is always a good idea. You can always take off layers if you are warm but cannot add layers if you are cold. It is also important you always have a pair of long pants with you, even in the summer. Certain times of the year it is always a good idea to have a hat or some rain gear in your backpack in case you get that quick rain squall.
  • A couple of different pairs of shoes are the most important pieces of clothing to have with you. If you are hiking on a graded trail or at the water, then a pair of sandals could be OK but if you are visiting Zion National Park or going on an ATV adventure then you will need a sturdy paid of closed toed shoes.
  • Do not forget to bring a good pair of sunglasses that have a UV rating with you. The summer sun can be a bit intense at times so don’t forget to protect your eyes. Bring a good pair of sunglasses you won’t mind if they get dropped in a river or a sand dune.
  • Small First Aid Kit
    • Always bring a first aid kit with you when in Southern Utah. Throw it in your backpack when you go on an adventure because you never know if you might get a blister from hiking in new hiking boots.

    Don’t forget SUNSCREEN

    • ALWAYS BRING A GOOD SUNSCREEN WITH YOU! Our sun can be intense in the summer so it is imperative you have a good sunscreen. DO NOT be afraid to use it often.
    • Even in the winter months we can have very high UV ratings so use sunscreen in the winter months as well.

    sand4Lip Balm

    • ALWAYS remember to bring plenty of lip balm with you. Remember your lips can get sunburned too.

    Water and Food

    • You will need to make sure you are ALWAYS hydrated!! You can never drink enough water in the desert. So, if you are hitting the trail, on an ATV adventure in the dunes, on the rocks or even in the water make sure you are bringing more water than you think you will need. If you are going on a tour, then ask if they provide water for you so you can lighten your load.
    • You will also want to pack a few small snacks like trail mix or protein bars, just in case. When you are out hiking trails, on the water or in the dunes, don’t forget to keep up your energy. Again, if you are taking a tour, ask if they provide snacks for you.

If your trip to Southern Utah includes an ATV or side-by-side UTV adventure on the best sand dunes in Utah, then just call the friendly staff at ATV & Jeep Adventure Tours and let them handle everything for you. The friendly staff can also help you find local accommodations and even other adventures such as zip lining, helicopter rides, mountain biking or even horseback riding with our partner companies.

The Zion Canyon Overlook trail at Zion National Park is a fairly easy hike that will reward you with panoramic views of the canyon that will leave you breathless. The entire hike was only a little bit more than a mile round trip and only takes about 40 minutes. If you are looking for a short hike, are pressed for time or have the kids or grandparent with you, then this is the hike for you.

The trail is well marked and is hiker friendly, can accommodate most people but is not handicapped accessible. The very beginning is the hardest part of the trail and it can seem a bit steep for some people. Once you get past the initial bit of climbing, nothing serious just a bit steep, then the rest of the hike is fairly level with small up and downs as you make your way out to the overlook. Since it is only about ½ a mile to the overlook most people can make the hike in about 20 minutes or so. You will want to take you time to enjoy the mesas and red rock formation you will see along the way to the overlook as well as the gorgeous views.

The Zion overlook trail not only offers view of the canyon and pine creek below but if you look toward the tunnel then you will also notice where the windows were carved into the rock as part of Zion tunnel during construction.

All in all, this is a great short hike that everyone should take the 40 minutes to enjoy. Take the kids and grandparents as this hike is sure to please the entire family, and the views will not disappoint anyone.

If you are going to Zion National Park, then this is a great short hike to plan on taking  before or after going on an ATV/UTV tour with ATV & Jeep Adventure tours!
